I’m finally in a position where I can get myself a phone with some actual horsepower (more so than my $50 LG, anyway), and I’ve been eyeballing these since they come in just below the $300 I’ve limited myself to. If you have one, or hell, anyt hing Samsung, how’s it been for you?

I loved my S7 until the Android 8 update which has destroyed my battery life. Putting it on battery saver permanently has alleviated some of it, but otherwise it’s a great phone if you ditch Samsung’s TouchJizz in favor of Nova launcher.

I have the S7. It’s the best phone I’ve ever had, zero issues in the year and half I’ve owned it.

My wife has one (not the edge, just a regular model) , and it’s a solid phone. Great screen, decent camera, phone/data/wifi works just fine. Samsung does a good job of not stuffing the phone full of crap.

I had one. It was decidedly okay.

No S7. but I have an ancient Samsung Galaxy Core LTE I bought used from some guy on Kijiji. I don’t do anything super high-needs with it, but it’s done everything I’ve asked for it and hasn’t put a foot wrong other than restarting at random once in a very long while (and, oddly, never while I’m using it....just when it’s charging or sitting on a table).

Aside from the sporadic rare restarts for no reason, I would recommend Samsung for sure.

All-around fantastic phone, unless you're unable to deal with custom skins. Only thing I'll say is that if you have the curved screen... Be careful. It cracks rediculously easy

I have an S7 but the SD card in it got corrupted and my phone almost cooked itself trying to read it one night. It has slowed down significantly since then and I just use it as an alarm phone now/emergency beater phone. I upgraded to an S8+ I got as a refurb for ~400$ and it has been significantly better IMO. It’s a bit more than the S7, but I think the S8 models are worth the premium.

I would reiterate battery life complaints. New the battery performed worse than my 2+yr old HTC One M8. That being said its getting on up there in age and still going so there’s that.

I have an S7 as a work phone. I don’t *love* it, but the battery is doing better than my previous S6. I’ve had no reliability issues, or any KWERKS .

I have one (the regular one rather than the edge).

Pros:

Nice screen

Always on screen is nice

Looks decent

Wireless charging

Fast charging is fast

MicroSD slot

Decent camera (though certainly not the best smart phone camera)

ANT+ antenna

Water resistant

Samsung’s software doesn’t seem to suck completely and/or stays out of the way (except Samsung pay, which is pretty aggressive about trying to get you to use it)

Cons:

Feels cheap

Slippery

Not very durable (paint on the metal sides chips easily, I’ve damaged the screen dropping it a couple times)

Poor battery life

Terrible speaker (seriously, it sucks)

App performance often seems worse than my old HTC One (M7). Some of that is probably the higher resolution, but regardless, it can get stuttery sometimes (I’ve never hard problems watching video or whatever though, just interactive apps).

I’m thinking about getting a new phone, but honestly there’s nothing out there that seems like it would be a huge upgrade over the S7 on the market.

wife has one and it’s been bullet proof so far - it’s kinda everything the s6 (which I have) was missing but not much extra stupid stuff, (other than the usual Samsung bloatware which honestly you can largely ignore or dump)

I had an S7 Edge and hated it. Any Samsung that’s not an S9 or Note 9 is trash. Samsung’s software is trash but at least this year’s phones from them FINALLY have enough horsepower to not lag and stutter like crazy. The S7 series, nope. That should tell you something that Samsung software needs a damn SD845 just to not run like trash. Fuck Samsung phones.

I’m a more stock Android guy. See what kind of deals you can find on the Essential PH-1, it’s way way better. I got mine on sale for $224 and love it. Motorola is also running deals for their 70th anniversary or something. B&H Photo is selling the OG Pixel XL for $340 for the 32 GB or $395 for 128 GB.

I have the s7 active it works great and I’m a hard core phone crusher. Not only do I drop and beat the hel l out if them, I hammer the os too since I use it for work and typically have about 10 really intrusive work   apps running hard while on a phone call and using it’s built in Wi-Fi for my laptop. (All while playing H ill C limb R acing) I miss being able to swap batteries like the older gen but the water resistance is nice.

I got one cheap (Goodwill Outlet, sold by the pound) and discovered what ‘FRP’ means in the context of phones. From what I’ve experienced, albeit rather limited due to the lock , it seems like a decent quality piece. However, having switched platforms to iOS a few years ago  I can’t think of any Android phone that would make me want to switch back.

I had the non edge version the battery was horrible to the point that i went back to apple. I dropped it not too big of a fall with a case and the back cracked.

I’ve set up a ton of the S7s for work. Our delivery drivers use them for order tracking and proof-of-delivery photos. I probably programmed 100 or more. I thought they were great phones until the latest Android update. After that, they slowed way down and the battery life went out the window.

I’m not a big Android person, so there’s probably other launchers or OS upgrades that I don’t know about. I just put the bare minimum on the devices to get them to work with my company’s software (after uninstalling as much of the preloaded junk as I could) , and then shipped them. We can’t get them anymore, and are now shipping S8s instead, which I like a lot better.

I dispute the cheap feel and bad speaker. Otherwise... yeah.

Also, I don’t like the launcher. Fortunately that’s easily fixed.

And Samsung’s heavily modded system makes it kind of a pain in the ass to troubleshoot since most of the info out there is based on a more or less stock Android system.

Battery life was shit before and after for me. That said I came from a Blackberry so take that as you will. But that being the case, I greatly prefer Oreo.

Also, Microsoft Launcher>Nova

I have an s7 edge and have absolutely hated it for the last year or so, cracks easily, slow performance, terrible battery, camera lens spontaneously combusted, etc etc. I'm anxiously awaiting the oneplus 6t so that I can ditch this POS.

I’ve seen worse. Their UI is pretty close to the native Android UI, and if you have an unlocked device (yay corporate phone) then you have more control.

It’s still a really good phone/camera .

I say this based on my own experience with an unlocked S7 Edge. It’s trash. The camera is above average but the phone sucks.
